Dr. William Adam account book collection, 1748-1875.

Primarily accounts kept by the iron manufacturing firm Forbes & Adam of East Canaan, Connecticut, along with accounts kept by the principals, Samuel Forbes and John Adam, before the partnership. The firm made nails and anchors among other items. Of particular note is a real estate volumes that records land purchases for the iron manufactory and iron mines. Collection includes John Adam Sr. accounts from Taunton, Massachusetts, an account book kept by Ratcliffe Hellon, shipbuilder of Taunton, and the accounts of Samuel F. Adam. Businesses represented include the Kent Ore Hill mine, Washington Slitting Mill, and Forbes & Adam's general store, paper mill and saw mill. Many volumes contain diary-type and financial entries made by Charles S. Adam from 1854-1875. He notes not only local births and deaths but also comments on national events such as the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
